Shiblaqbri is where people can express their personal and knowledgeable antidotes of what beauty means to them. We digitally publish product reviews, interviews, and feature articles. We focus on slow beauty, pop culture, and lifestyle topics to engage our audience’s wants and needs. Being familiar with the content on the website will go a long way in your success of getting your pitch accepted.

Shiblaqbri Writer’s Guidelines

  • What We Look For:

We are always looking for slow beauty, wellness, and pop culture pitches. The biggest need on our site is in the Pop Culture section so those may take the forefront over others.

  • Make It Personal:

Our audience thrives on personal narratives that connect them to the subjects we write about. Using your own experiences to discuss a topic will definitely be in an in with Shiblaqbri.

  • What To Include:

Please include PITCH in the subject line with the title of your piece. Explain your pitch, why this particular story needs to be told, and why Shiblaqbri is the best place to do it. Include your bio and clips.

Do’s & Don’ts:

Do be creative. Take chances with your writing and tap into storytelling when you write for us. Our audience loves descriptions. Show vs tell.

Do include sources. Anytime you are talking about subjects that require fact-checking make sure you are including your sources not only in the article but to your editor. Even adding sources on personal articles can help elevate your topic!

Don’t be too formal. Our audience loves to feel like we are talking directly to them. While you should still be following our style & length guidelines, you should leave room for casual conversation in your writing.

Don’t go against our values. Any pitch or writing that is pro-consumerism, fatphobic, racist, ableist, or discriminatory in nature will not be accepted. Please review our mission and vision prior to pitching.

Do be personal. Our readers love to feel connected to our articles and personal narratives always do best on our site. This does not mean writing about traumatic experiences that may be harmful to you or others. Trauma pieces must be done carefully, so those kinds of articles will be handled with an extreme level of care.

Editorial Calendar

Style & Length

  • Articles must be 650-1500 words in length unless otherwise stated in the signed contract.

  • Write your story in conversational English, as one industry insider speaking to another. Our readers love it when we write as if we are speaking directly to them.

  • Define all acronyms on first use.

  • Identify all persons quoted including their name, title, and company affiliation.

  • Hyperlink to your sources and related relevant content whenever possible.

  • When applicable, source citations should follow AP guidelines.

  • Provide graphics in GIF or JPEG format (max 200 KB) no wider than 700 pixels. Attach the graphics to your submission email. Include a caption of 15-25 words in complete sentences, cite the source of the graphics, and ensure that we have permission to reproduce the graphics online.

    • We tend to use Unsplash and credit the photographer or owner of the photo. If you are using your own photos they should be of high quality.

    • For pop culture, we use the Everett collection.

  • Include a bio in the third person for your article submission to appear on the website. 3-5 sentences is a good length. This will appear only on the first article you write for our site.

Covered Topics to Pitch

  • Slow Beauty: Have you reviewed our Beauty page? Are you familiar with what has been published on this site? What is missing from this section? Our product reviews are detailed and are done after 30-60 days of using the product. Any pitches connecting Beauty and consumerism/overconsumption will take precedence.

  • Pop Culture: Have you reviewed the articles on this page? What’s missing from this section? We cover books, TV, and movies in this section. Book reviews are welcomed as long as they are detailed and constructive.

  • Lifestyle: Have you reviewed our Lifestyle page? We are focusing on slow-living content here. What is missing from this section? A perfect example of a contribution we have received is How I've Learned to Exercise On My Own Terms As A Black Woman or The Sustainable Benefits of Window Shopping.

Payment, General Terms, and Reprints

Shiblaqbri is a reader-funded, independent magazine. Meaning that our pay varies based on donations and how much the owner, Brianna, can contribute for the Quarter. We hope to have more funding in the future, but for now, our pitch calls range from $50-$100 per article.

We give priority to articles that have not been previously published. We no longer accept reprints. We prioritize marginalized voices and perspectives as Shiblaqbri is founded by a queer, Black, disabled person.
